What I liked

I enjoyed meeting other interns and working side by side with them. I liked who I worked with including my boss and other upper management. I also liked the projects and assignments I was given because what I was doing was really helping and making a difference.

What I wish was different

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience would be to always have an attitude when going into work to want to learn and grow in your career. Making connections and expanding your network is something that can happen everyday on the job,

Technical Intern

What I liked

The work is fascinating, and its nice to see part of my schooling prepare me for real-world tasks. The people are what make the job and I am working with people who are hard-working and easy to talk to. They never shot down any of my questions and were more then helpful when it came to assisting me in accomplishing my tasks.

What I wish was different

The work pace is transient. Some days will be very slow, and others will by high-tempo.

Advice

This internship is at a company that is a contracted out by the Air Force, so the Job will give you a really good taste of government work. People have commented that the government is has a slower approach to tasks due to countless checks and balances and quality assurance, which some people really like.

The company culture was great, having every other Friday off was good for relaxing, and the work was really interesting.

What I wish was different

I would have enjoyed working more with other interns in addition to my individual work.

Advice

If a student is interning here, they should really make an effort to get to know their cube neighbors.

Operations Finance Intern

What I liked

The atmosphere of the company was great. I was given the freedom to try the problems on my own before asking for direction. Everyone treated me as a regular employee rather than a summer intern.

What I wish was different

I wish I was given more responsibility, but overall I thought it was a great experience.

Advice

Trust your instincts and go with your gut when solving problems. The worst case scenario is that you got it wrong and have to go in a different direction, but at least you put the effort in and tried.

Export/Contracts Intern

What I liked

I loved working with the finance, contracts, and legal department in this role. I got to see a lot of different aspects of the company and the work BAE Systems conducts.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been sitting next to some other interns, but without this I bonded with my team.

Network all you can and hand out business cards while there.

What I liked

My manager and my coworkers were nice and helpful. The environment was collaborative and friendly to a work-life balance. I gained mentors and everyone in the company was willing to talk to me and help me figure out what career I wanted.

What I wish was different

I wish that the actual work I did in my internship was related to my major and what I do in school.

Network by asking for short, informational interviews with employees, and LISTEN.

Environmental Engineering Intern

What I liked

I was respected and treated as a member of the team. I was provided autonomy in completing the assigned projects I was given. The projects I took part in had real-world consequences and mattered to the organization and customer greatly. I felt I was making a difference for the company. The company provided opportunities to network, shadow, travel on business-related trips, and to an extent build my own work schedule.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been compensated more for the work I did. I wish I would have had a chance to take part in intern activities more. Often interns in other departments took part in lunches, outings, and fun outside of work I was never made aware of.

Advice

Take the work you do seriously, and don't be afraid to make projects your own. Answers will not be provided and situations will not be idealized like homework in school. Ask questions on where to go to gather information, not just to be provided the information itself.

Technical Intern III

What I liked

I learned a lot about electronic systems and how mechanical and electrical engineers can work together to create some very complicated and cool products.

What I wish was different

I wish that the atmosphere had been more collaborative. Everyone seemed to keep to themselves a lot.

Advice

Working on such important, technically challenging project was a little intimidating to me at first. I set up weekly meetings with the manager on my biggest project. That way I could be sure that I was on the same page about the objectives throughout the process and get some of my bigger design decisions double checked.

What I liked

The experience of working for a big company and learning all the ins and outs of what they actually do was really cool. The coworkers were all really friendly and the overall experience made me look forward to applying to work there full time after graduation.

What I wish was different

Due to being only an intern the amount of work was limited. There were high points of new projects where i would get to do or learn something new but there was a lot of downtime, but i was getting paid so cant really complain.

Advice

I felt that doing an internship was very beneficial towards my overall career. Not only did i get good work experience towards learning about a certain career path and business but it was a great opportunity to get my foot in the door with a great company and boost my resume.

Technical Intern III: FPGA Design

What I liked

I really enjoyed the design work I got into. I was able to target Xilinx FPGAs and design a state machine that would configure another external device. I had a really good experience with my project mentor as well as the project overall. I can definitely say this experience will be useful in looking for a career in the field.

What I wish was different

Due to the COVID pandemic I couldn't be on-site, so all of my work was remote. However, this didn't prevent good communication with my project mentor. Because the project was going so well, he actually was able to take out lab equipment for me to use the last week of the internship to test out the design after simulation. But I do wish I could have gotten the chance to work on-site and in the lab.

Advice

Communication is key. If you're stuck on something, don't spin on it and try to figure it out on your own. Ask for help or advice and don't be afraid to. Communicate with your team or mentor and you'd be surprised how much great info you can learn.

Aerospace and Environmental Engineering Intern

What I liked

Working for a company invested in a critical portion of the National Defense Strategy was a privilege. I had the opportunity to travel to five locations across the mid to western states to meet full time service members and assess capabilities of the weapon system they were tasked with sustaining. In doing so I crossed over into multiple engineering disciplines completing the assignments I was given. I felt like I was treated as an employee rather than an intern with the level of autonomy I worked with.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to participate in more mechanically oriented projects. Most of my assignments revolved around environmental law and ensuring various design team members understood the constraints it placed on their work.

Advice

Never think you aren't qualified enough for an internship. Either you will gain experience in networking and interviewing that could be used for future opportunities, or you will be given the chance to take part in some really great work. It is NEVER too early to start actively looking for future career opportunities.
