Intermountain Health

CNA

April - August 2019 • St. George, UT

What I liked

I liked being on the hospital setting and being able to see what it is like. Also, it helped me realize that I did not want to be a nurse.

What I wish was different

I wish I worked on the floor more often. Sitting with one patient during a shift is exhausting and boring.

Advice

Make sure you bring stuff to do because sometimes you are not busy at all. However, don't plan on getting anything done because you are at work and sometimes it is busy depending on your patients.

Administrative Intern

January - April 2019 • American Fork, UT

What I liked

I really appreciated the fact that I was exposed to a broad view of what responsibilities are for a hospital administrator.

What I wish was different

Finding ways to contribute as an intern can often be difficult and I think having certain expectations going into the interniship is important.

Advice

Always look for ways to be productive and helpful even if it means you are shoveling snow or doing filing because it's all part of the opportunity.

Out-Patient Cardiac Rehab

June - August 2019 • Murray, UT

What I liked

I really enjoyed how hands-on this internship was. From day one, I was interacting with patients, answering questions, and learning how to take vitals. I also really appreciated that a full-time employee was always there to support me. I was never expected to make any official decisions when I didn't feel comfortable, but I got to the point where they trusted me to make any decisions I was confident in. I also got to see several other departments in the hospital: the heart failure clinic, the EKG technician department, in-patient cardiac rehab, and even some surgeries. Highly, highly recommend!

What I wish was different

Obviously, not being paid wasn't ideal. They do try to make up for it by offering to let you become EKG certified, which means you can take a class that usually costs a couple hundred dollars.

Advice

Take the train! The Murray stop lets you off right across the street from the hospital, which is super convenient. It also really helped to look up a couple videos about how to read an EKG. It's not required, but then you can have a better idea of how the patients are doing.

Patient care technician Mother Baby

July 2019 • Provo, UT

What I liked

Loved getting to work with mothers and babies as they adjust to their new life! The staff is so friendly and welcoming and it opened up the door to me getting hired as an RN starting in January!

What I wish was different

Not much! I just wish I could have started sooner. The hiring process through intermountain takes a long time.

Continuous Improvement Intern

May - August 2019 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I was able to work directly with upper management and have the freedom to tackle my own projects and present them to the administrator.

What I wish was different

The ambiguity was a double edged sword. The role required a lot of ambiguity which was frustrating at times, but will be useful moving forward.

Advice

Interact with as many of the upper management and the administrator as often as possible. Receiving their feedback was invaluable during my time there.
