Transportation Asset Specialist Intern

The role:

Would you like an opportunity to break into the exploding world of transportation asset management? Do you have a passion for public service and public safety? If so, ODOT wants you! Come join our team as a transportation asset specialist through our popular internship program. In this role you will work with a diverse team of engineering professionals to produce asset management data products and will enjoy working with various types of interesting technology. We are accepting applications from college students who have completed at least their freshman year and those who have recently graduated with their associates, bachelors, masters or doctoral degree. There are two internships available in Salem.

A day in the life:

  • Operate the ODOT Video Van to record field data.
  • Ensure that recorded images meet ODOT linear referencing system standards.
  • Apply surveying and engineering principles to determine locations.
  • Measure roadway geometry.
  • Perform pavement condition estimates.
  • Measure traffic signal timing.
  • Perform quality control.
  • Post content to the web.
  • Perform video editing and duplication.
  • Assist with the selection, testing and implementation of technical equipment.
  • Assist with post-processing and distribution of recorded images.
  • Help determine and enact standard procedures for operating and maintaining vehicle and video equipment.
  • Extensive statewide overnight travel will occur with work hours varying from 40-46 per week.

What you will learn:

  • The fundamentals of transportation asset management.
  • How to conduct resource grade field surveys and inventories.
  • How to collect, edit and distribute videos.
  • You will learn about a variety of transportation programs, including those involving pavement management and traffic monitoring.
  • You will travel around the state and experience the diversity of the state highway system and the people we serve.

What we need:

  • A college student studying civil engineering, surveying, math, geography, planning or a related field whose freshman year will be completed by June 2019. Satisfactory grades are a plus! Those who have graduated from college with a degree in these fields within the last two years are also invited to apply.
  • Driving is an essential function of this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidates.

  • Ability to perform job duties based on travel requirements.
  • Experience and ability to drive long distances or for extended periods of time.
