Pavement Management Intern

The role:

Are you a college student working towards a career in engineering or transportation planning? If so, ODOT wants you! Come join our team as a pavement management technician in Salem through our popular internship program. In this role, you will collect data about the condition of pavements to benefit public safety.

A day in the life:

  • Collect data on the condition of pavements.
  • Drive a vehicle on the state highway system while towing a trailer that contains pavement friction and smoothness testing equipment.
  • While riding as a passenger, operate a computer using equipment-specific software.
  • Calibrate equipment.
  • Process and transfer field data.
  • Read maps to plan routes for data collection.
  • Change worn tires on the friction testing trailer.
  • Drive and ride for long distances (up to 10 to 13 hours per day).
  • Travel statewide, typically three to four weeks during the summer months (most often you will be home on weekends).
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

What you will learn:

  • You will learn about asset management in the pavement discipline.
  • You will learn about highway positioning systems and nomenclature.
  • You will learn how to perform transportation engineering responsibilities.
  • You will learn how to collect engineering data and perform quality checks.
  • You will get to work with professional engineers.

What we need:

  • A college student who will have completed at least their freshman year by June 2019. Recent college graduates (within the last two years) are also invited to apply.
  • A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position.
