Conservation Stewardship Leader at Camp Hale

Established in 1900, Camp Hale is a sleepaway summer camp for Boston-area youth ages 6 to 17 years old to experience a range of outdoor activities in the scenic environment of Squam Lake located in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Camp Hale transforms youth into resilient leaders as they discover the wonders of nature, build a diverse community, and embrace challenging experiences. The camp operates on the belief that all youth benefit from opportunities for physical, mental, and social growth and development. The goal is for campers to leave with an enhanced sense of well-being, improved social skills, and awareness of personal potential.

Camp Hale AmeriCorps Members

Camp Hale is a host site of the Lakes Region Conservation Corps. Members participate in a 22.5 week program, May 22- October 26, 2019, that takes place before, during, and after camp season in order to establish and lead innovative conservation programs within the site. Under the supervision of the Camp Hale Director, members will lead trailwork crews, organize terrestrial invasive removal initiatives, plan and conduct environmental education programs, and lead guided hikes. Members conduct these programs while maintaining the Camp mission of providing guidance, leadership, and support to all individuals participating. As a new program, members will be provided the opportunity to develop additional conservation programs based on the needs of the site.

Members at Camp Hale Receive These Benefits:

  • The support of an experienced Camp Director and an administrative team to help with anything you need
  • Three meals provided daily from June 10- August 31
  • Provided Housing: AmeriCorps members live with camp counselors and camp attendees on a rotating basis.
  • $200 weekly stipend provided on a bi-weekly basis (subject to taxes)
  • Segal Education Award of $2,907 dependent on 900 hours of service.

Expectations:
  • Be able to recognize opportunities for new and innovative conservation programs based on the needs of the site.
  • Communicate the mission of the Conservation Corps while maintaining positive relations with parents, visitors, and the general public at all times.
  • Demonstrate/teach Camp Hale values of community, diversity and opportunity to all campers and staff.
  • Actively participate in staff training, meetings, etc.
  • Submit all required paperwork on time
  • Follow all camp rules, regulations and policies and enforce them among peers.
  • Maintain established health, safety and cleanliness standards of the Camp Hale and ACA.
  • Follow established procedures for supervising camper health and enforcing all safety regulations.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and situations requiring first aid and/or CPR.

Requirements:
  • Demonstrate an interest in cultivating conservation efforts through environmental stewardship while incorporating the core values of the site
  • Have youth-related work experience, outdoor education, and/or camping experience
  • Have the ability to work successfully with a diverse group of campers and other camp personnel
·        Must be able to climb, balance, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and be capable of repetitive motion(with or without accommodation)
  • Able to carry and use heavy tools while hiking
·        Ability to lift up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or a 20 pounds of force constantly (Qualification)
  • Must have health insurance for the duration of the program.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have a high-school diploma or GED and possess a high level of maturity.
  • Must meet the Corporation for National Community Service's minimum requirement
  • Must clear all required National Service Criminal History Check
  • Must be a high school graduate, GED recipient, or must be working toward attaining a high school diploma or GED during their term of service
  • Must be a US citizen, US national, or legal permanent resident of the US
