ACE EPIC USFS ID: Caribou-Targhee NF Forestry Technician (Wilderness/Trails)

American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps based in Flagstaff, AZ, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, Caribou-Targhee National Forest, is seeking two Forestry Technicians (Wilderness/Trails) to dedicate 12-14 weeks supporting the Wilderness program within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest by performing a variety of routine natural resource tasks in support of the unit wilderness program in recreation, trails, and fire. This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic young professionals with a deep interest in advancing their career goals in natural resource management and conservation. 

Start Date: Mid to late June 

End Date: 12-14 weeks after start date

Location: Caribou-Targhee National Forest

Caribou-Targhee National Forest is located in the states of Idaho and Wyoming, with a small section in Utah. The forest extends over 2.63 million acres. To the east the forest borders Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park and Bridger-Teton National Forest. Most of the forest is a part of the 20 million acre Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Caribou and Targhee National Forests were combined from original forest lands created in 1891. Two designated wilderness areas are located in the easternmost sections of the forest. The 123,451 acre Jedediah Smith Wilderness is known for karst limestone formations and has many caves and provides excellent views of the less often seen west face of the Teton peaks. The smaller 10, 715 acre Winegar Hole Wilderness was set aside primarily to protect prime grizzly bear habitat.

While western sections of the forest have a mixture of sagebrush and grasses, the higher elevations in the east support lodgepole pine, and numerous species of spruce and fir. In addition to grizzlies most of the major megafauna associated with Yellowstone National Park can be found in Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Black bear, wolf, elk, moose, mule deer, bison, grizzly bears, mountain lion, and pronghorn have all been seen on forest lands. An active peregrine falcon recovery program was begun to return this bird species to some of their ancestral range. Native cutthroat trout and other trout are found in the streams and lakes and the forest is considered one of the best fishing areas in the world for cutthroat trout.

Dozens of campgrounds and 1,600 miles of trails allow access to much of the forest.

Compensation: The technician should anticipate serving 40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $565/wk., for food and incidentals, dispersed bi-weekly

Housing: Provided by the Forest Service, bunkhouse accommodations (no pets allowed).

Position Description: The Forestry Technician will assist the Forest Service personnel with various aspects of the Wilderness program including trail maintenance, wilderness inventory and monitoring, and implementing NEPA and LAC (Limits of Acceptable Change) processes. Participants will help with educating the public about Wilderness awareness and regulation compliance, campsite impacts and Leave No Trace (LNT) principles. The work completed is reviewed for technical adequacy and soundness and accomplishment of overall objectives. 

Work is performed outdoors where there is exposure to extremes of weather and temperature. Work area varies from established administrative areas to wilderness areas. The work requires use of safety equipment such as boots, gloves, goggles, and hard hat. Requires working and living under primitive conditions. Project work requires making decisions concerning weather. Field work will require working in both frontcountry and backcountry settings (remote camping up to 5 days in a row). Walking, digging holes, posting signs, and other general maintenance requirements may be required. The work requires moderate to strenuous physical exertion including walking on steep or uneven terrain, bending, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds or more. Project work requires that personnel camp out and have long pack outs.
