Intern - ACE EPIC NPS GA: Interpretation - AmeriCorps

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps based in Flagstaff, AZ, in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking ONE Interpretation Intern to dedicate 12 weeks in support of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. The intern would be primarily focused on the park's well-established summer day camp program partnered with the YMCA. The ACE intern would develop environmental education programs under the direction of park staff, and would lead these programs throughout the course of the summer camps.
This excellent opportunity is ideal for an enthusiastic young professional who is deeply committed to the preservation of our national parks. Applicants must have strong interest in a career in natural resource management.

Location: Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area in Atlanta, GA.
Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is "an ancient river in a modern city," and offers many opportunities to get outdoors, including hiking, rafting, and fishing. Atlanta is Georgia's largest city and capital, and can boast itself as a thriving business and entertainment center with an eclectic mix of residents back dropped by a city with southern roots.

Compensation: The ACE interns receive a living allowance of $250/week for food and incidental expenses, paid bi-weekly.
 
AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 300-hour AmeriCorps Education Award of ($1,252.91) upon successful completion of internship hours. Additional enrollment is required.
 
Position Description:  The purpose of this position is to provide a fulfilling experience for the intern, whereby he/she gains greater knowledge of the park and its resources and learns of various employment opportunities within the NPS and conservation careers. The ACE intern will increase our park presence during the camps so that the youth and YMCA partners have routine interactions with a representative of the National Park Service, and specifically, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.
As a result of this experience, the intern would have gained additional program facilitation skills, knowledge of environmental education best practices, group management experience, public speaking skills, and an opportunity to connect Atlanta's urban and underserved youth to a national park and the first National Water Trail. The position both promotes understanding and awareness of fragile park resources as well as promoting environmental education through direct stewardship activities.
Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Develop environmental education programs (a minimum of 3 lessons/activities), under the direction of park staff.
  • Lead various programs throughout the course of the summer camps.
  • Participate in creating and leading outreach events to the communities to promote and encourage participation in the camp.
 
Training: The ACE intern will be required to complete training on interpretation, Leave No Trace, and education facilitation techniques about park resources. The park will provide safety training, interpretation, ethics, first aid, CPR, education, program facilitation, and social media and marketing support.
 
Qualifications: Applicants for the position will hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree and/or experience in some aspect of natural resource study. This could include subject areas such as botany, ecology, biology, wildlife, natural resources, environmental science, or related disciplines.
Required:
 
  • Must be a US Citizen and Permanent Resident
  • Must be 18-35 years of age (interns must be 21-35 to apply for any ACE position that requires or anticipates operation of agency or ACE vehicles for duties)
  • Must have a valid driver's license, provide documentation of a clean driving record, and have a personal vehicle
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals within NPS
  • Must have effective communication skills with diverse audiences
  • Ability to self-direct alone and effectively participate in a group or small team environments
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required
  • Proficiency in English is required
The interns must be willing to represent ACE and NPS in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Drug users should not consider applying, as ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.
