The role:
Do you have education and experience in engineering? Want to be involved in transportation projects that will have an impact for years and decades to come? As an inspector, you will be a part of the project manager’s crew, providing engineering assistance in administering highway construction projects. This will involve surveying, inspection, contract administration and office work. If you are dependable and looking for a career with growth potential, ODOT wants you!

A day in the life:
  • Coordinate inspection activities on construction projects to meet the needs of the contractor’s work schedule.
  • Serve as lead inspector on complex projects.
  • Provide general oversight to assure contractor and DBE (Disadvantaged Business Enterprise) subcontractors meet requirements.
  • Prepare or direct preparation of quality test summary book, supporting documentation notebooks and installation notebooks.
  • Review and recommend any alterations or changes of contract plans and specifications as necessary.
  • Initiate, negotiate and draft proposed contract change orders.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with contractors and their representatives on assigned projects. Facilitate project related meetings as necessary.
  • Work in both an office environment and in the field. More than half of your time will be in and around construction equipment on a daily basis.
  • Occasional travel is expected, and working at project sites with exposure to rough terrain, inclement weather and hazardous plant and insect life may be required.

What we need:
  • An Associate's degree in Engineering Technology from a recognized community college or technical school of engineering and four years of experience directly related to engineering.
OR
  • Five and one-half years (66 months) of sub-professional engineering experience.
OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
