Internship - Product UX

PRODUCT UX INTERN
PROGRAM: MassChallenge HQ 
FULL TIME (~35 hours/week) 
DATES: June 5th - August 16th or August 23rd 
COMPENSATION: $12.00/hour

As the Product UX Intern you will get to know our community and their needs first hand. Use that knowledge to guide improvements to the MassChallenge software platform. Reporting to the Product UX Designer, you will research UX and test usability, collect data to test our strategic product initiatives, and validate draft interfaces and gathering feedback about recently deployed features. As part of the product team, you will work through multiple stages of the product design lifecycle and drive insights to become actionable results in the form of planned or delivered work. The capstone for your internship is a project expands your familiarity with user research, data analysis, and product design. What You’ll Do 
Research strategic software initiatives using quantitative and qualitative methods. Choose the right research tool for the job depending on the product lifecycle. 
  • Gather research to validate future initiatives and feature development.
  • Work with the Product UX Designer to identify key areas of the software that need deeper insight into our userbase. 
  • Design a UX research methodology appropriate for the scale and application.  
  • Conduct online data collection including surveys, information mapping exercises, and other industry tools. 
  • Create reports that summarize user behavior, intent, desire, confusion, need, or other relevant metrics that can help inform product decisions. 
  • Record findings and compile feedback indicating success and failures of the feature, proposed changes, observed challenges, and other usability feedback. 
  • Validate new features and User Interfaces (UI). 
  • Source appropriate candidates for online or in person 1:1 usability sessions.
  • Conduct 1:1 product interviews in person or online. 
  • Record findings and compile feedback indicating success and failures of the feature, proposed changes, observed challenges, and other usability feedback. 
  • Assist with creating new wireframes, mockups, or workflow diagrams. 
  • Apply research and usability findings to the product development. 
  • Assist the UX Designer with creating, iterating, and developing mockups and prototypes. 
  • Actively participate in informal product feature reviews.

  • You are a collaborator. You know your strengths that can help the team. You are honest about your weaknesses and seek help from other team members where necessary.  
  • Useful Skills:
  • Research interest or background, qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis, statistical analysis, product usability moderating, experimental design, and test method selection.
  • Strong spoken and written communication skills. Comfort engaging with lots of new people. Awareness of how your own bias can influence an interview.
  • Tech proficient, excited to learn new or unfamiliar technologies and software. Potential technologies are Figma, Optimal Workshop suite, Jira, and R.
  • Highly organized and methodical.

Timeline 
Our summer internships at MassChallenge will start on Wednesday, June 5th, starting with a comprehensive intern onboarding day. We expect most internships to end on Friday, August 16th or Friday, August 23rd. If you have a schedule conflict, please communicate that to the hiring manager during the interview process. This will not disqualify you but is important information as we plan onboarding and offboarding for the 2019 Summer Intern cohort.
