Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Intern (San Antonio Proper - Alamo North)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Texas Workforce Commission, a dynamic state agency with 4,500 employees helping the state's economy grow by connecting people with jobs, is offering internship opportunities for the fall of 2019.

TWC internships offer real-life experience in public service. Interns can gain work experience and instruction in performing a wide variety of tasks that may include working with the public or doing research. Interns assist in the performance of skilled clerical, technical or professional duties. Interns may perform entry-level administrative support or technical program assistance work depending on agency need and the intern's unique skills.

The Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Intern will perform work in support of the mission, goals and values of Texas Workforce Solutions Vocational Rehabilitation Services (TWS VRS) and applies critical thinking skills and sound decision-making in performance of routine Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) work. Work is performed using the TWS VRS electronic case management system. The VR Counselor Intern will work independently, under moderate supervision by the VR Supervisor, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. The intern will be provided feedback from their manager. The VR Counselor Intern will require substantial coaching and mentoring. Work performed supports employment outcomes for people with disabilities by:
  • Developing and maintaining relations with community referral sources, businesses, employers and schools as applicable.
  • Gathering and analyzing all information necessary to assist the qualified Vocational Rehab Counselor in forming an accurate eligibility decision (e.g. medical, psychological, school records, employment records, etc.)
  • Assisting the customer in choosing an appropriate employment goal by analyzing information to determine the customer's strengths, resources, priorities, concerns, abilities, capabilities and interests, and matching that information to the current job market, as appropriate.
  • Working collaboratively with the Counselor to develop a plan of services designed to achieve the customer's identified employment goal.
  • Ensuring timely, cost-effective provision of services and customer progress toward achievement of their goal.
  • Developing and implementing a process leading to successful job placement or other planned outcome.
  • Applies best value purchasing practices and uses available comparable benefits and services to ensure effective use of public funds.
This is a great internship for students looking to gain real-world experience at a great state agency with a noble public service mission. This internship opportunity would be out of the Alamo North Management Unit and would be located out of the San Antonio proper area. The specific building location will be determined upon selection.

TWC Internships are full or part-time, temporary positions that cannot be filled for more than six months in a year. The internship pays $2,600 per month at a full-time status and comes with some benefits.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of GED certification.
  • Proof of enrollment at an accredited college or university must be provided. Continued enrollment may be required throughout internship.
  • Preferred participation or enrollment in a master's level degree program with a concentration in rehabilitation counseling, Counseling, behavioral health, behavioral science, disability studies, human relations, human services, marriage and family therapy, occupational therapy, psychology, psychometrics, rehabilitation administration/services, social work, special education, vocational assessment/evaluation.
Experience:
  • No working experience required.
