Self Contained Para Educator

Granite School District is looking for candidates for Special Education Paraeducators (working with students with disabilities).

Work Performed (General Description) for All Positions
·        The Paraeducator (teacher classroom aide) assists the supervising teacher by performing a variety of tasks to support instruction and classroom programming.
·        The Paraeducator works under the direction of the supervising teacher at all times. The main responsibilities of the Paraeducator are to provide direct services to students.
·        The Classroom Teacher must design, supervise, and coordinate the activities of each Paraeducator.
·
Essential Functions for All Positions
·        Implement drill and practice exercises designed by the teacher to groups, as well as individual students.
·        Keep accurate data on assigned groups and/or individual students. The teacher prepares the method to be used in data collection.
·        Supervise and monitor student instructional activities within the classroom and school settings.
·        Support a school environment that helps students develop and maintain a positive self-concept.
·        Supervise students in order to help provide a safe learning environment.
·        Appropriately use classroom materials/technology.
·        Assist students in classes.
·        Prepare and adapt instructional materials.
·        Maintain professional confidentiality regarding student progress, physical/emotional limitations, discussing these only with supervising teacher, related services professional, administrator or program coordinator.

·        FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAEDUCATORS
  • Supervise and monitor student instructional activities within the school and in the assigned community settings. Examples include, but are not limited to: assisting students accessing public transportation, recess supervision, assisting students in acquiring employment skills, assisting students in development of self-help and personal skills, etc.
  • Provide personal maintenance care for students related to self-help and hygiene. Examples include, but are not limited to: gastronomy tube feeding, oral feeding, catheterizing, toilet training, changing diapers and personal care, such as tooth brushing.
  • Implement appropriate procedures consistently in managing the behavior of students in accordance with district policies.
  • Assist students in regular classes.

Additional Job-Related Responsibilities for All Positions
·        Must be able to work assigned hours. An employee is entitled to one 10-minute break for every two and one-half hours worked, and a one-half hour non-paid lunch.
·        Participate in in-service training required by the school.
·        Comply with Granite School District attendance and punctuality policies.
·        Perform other duties as assigned.

·        FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAEDUCATORS
  • Must be able to independently move and position students with disabilities weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to assist with moving heavier students.
  • Bus supervision may be included.
  • Participate in in-service training required by the Special Education Department.

Special Skills Required by Job
·        The Para-educator should have the skills necessary to follow the Classroom Teacher's directions for instructional practice, and academic skills development for students. Skills in the operation of specific achievement testing and data collection are also necessary.
·        The Para-educator must effectively manage stress arising from working with students.

·        FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION PARA-EDUCATORS
  • The Special Education Para-educator should have the skills necessary to follow the Special Education Teacher's and related services professional's directions for instructional practice, behavioral interventions, and functional skills development for students. Skills in the operation of specific achievement testing and data collection are also necessary.
  • The Special Education Para-educator must effectively manage stress arising from working with students with disabilities.

Salary Ranges
·        Special Education Para-educators start at $13.20 per hour.
