Director, Development

The Director, Development for the Cal Alumni Association (CAA) oversees our donor relations program and manages our fundraising initiatives. CAA provides over $2 million in scholarship awards and support services to nearly 800 UC Berkeley undergraduate students every year. The Director leads and oversees the fundraising and stewardship efforts and the events which support the annual and endowment goals of CAA’s three scholarship programs.

The Director, Development is also responsible for developing and managing a comprehensive, strategic, integrated effort to build the base of individual donors and increase the overall financial support of CAA through annual giving. That includes developing campaigns using direct mail and telemarketing efforts, cultivating current and prospective donors, and building a stronger development team for our organization. This position reports to our Chief Revenue Officer.
The mission of the Cal Alumni Association is to advance and promote the interests of the University of California, Berkeley by connecting alumni with each other and our alma mater. In all that we do, we inform, engage, and inspire alumni to support the university.

Responsibilities: 

  • Develop an annual business plan for Annual Giving program outlining goals, strategies, and tactics to achieve our revenue goals. 
  • Lead the strategic planning, design, and implementation of donor relations and stewardship strategies. 
  • Lead the strategic planning and implementation of stewardship communications efforts, including Giving Notes.  
  • Develop and implement fundraising strategies and initiatives to meet or exceed fundraising and net revenue goals.
  • Accountable for all fiscal aspects of our fundraising program, including budget development, forecasting, analysis, and tracking against goals. Provide budget updates to Chief Revenue Officer.  
  • Lead and manage the production of direct mail, telemarketing, and e-solicitations to acquire, reactivate and retain donors.
  • Manage a portfolio of 20-30 CAA Annual Fund donors with the goal of building relationships as well as retaining or increasing donor giving.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing team to develop annual giving marketing materials, including brochures, case statements, and other collateral.
  • Manage annual giving stewardship plan, including oversight of the giving recognition program.
  • Provide reports to the Chief Revenue Officer and Senior Management Team (SMT) as to the progress towards goals and deadlines. Periodically present updates to the CAA Board of Directors regarding board member giving, and overall Annual Giving progress.  
  • Evaluate, analyze and report on the effectiveness of fundraising strategies, appeals and programs, making and implementing strategic and operational recommendations.
  • Develop and manage the stewardship events budget. Provide budget narrative and guidance to Chief Revenue Officer, SMT, and the CAA Board.
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 70-80 alumni scholarship donors and the stewardship strategies associated with this group.
  • Partner with CAA Alumni Scholarships team on the management of endowment database, donor-student matching process, and effective information-sharing mechanisms for stewarding prospects and donors.
  • Manage and oversee a donor acknowledgment and recognition program(s) including oversight of information tracking processes for acknowledgment, recognition, on-going communications and cultivation of all donors to CAA.
  • Analyze effectiveness of stewardship strategies and programs, making and implementing strategic and operational recommendations.
  • Oversee alumni scholarships donor / student events in collaboration with the Scholarships team, such as the Achievement Award Program dinner, The Leadership Recognition Luncheon and the Kruttschnitt Aspire Scholarship dinner.
  • Manage and support approximately 450 named endowments as well as any new endowments created. 
  • Work with Fund Management on campus regarding balances, payouts, financial reporting, etc. 
  • Ensure all donor communications, stewardship reports, and donor outreach activities are recorded in the CADS database. 
  • Supervise stewardship program manager and annual fund senior coordinator responsible for assisting with annual fund and donor relations tasks and events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 5-7+ years of direct fundraising experience with knowledge of annual fundraising campaigns.
  • Solid organizational, administrative, and managerial skills including the ability to create and implement a strategic plan, and develop and manage a program budget with net revenue responsibility.
  • Understanding of database management, gift processing, and donor relations.
  • Ability to learn and use CADS (Cal Advancement Data System)
  • Demonstrated success and evidence of ability to plan, execute and measure the impact of appeals and programs.
  • Experience developing fundraising marketing collateral and messaging for campaigns.
  • Experience with strategic planning, performance metrics, management reporting, and budget planning.
  • Experience managing and leading administrative staff.
  • Ability to manage and evaluate external vendors.
  • Experience delivering a high level of customer service.
  • Capacity to deal effectively with a wide range of relationships and situations. 
  • Proven ability to work with confidential information and act with discretion and diplomacy in all matters. Professional demeanor and conduct are a must.
  • Ability to work cooperatively to achieve common goals with cooperation and collaboration.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. 
  • Excellent organizational skills, analytical skills, and attention to detail.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and development databases.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Must have flexibility in work schedule to permit occasional evening and weekend commitments.
  • Must submit to and pass Consumer and Motor Vehicle reports and FBI/DOJ fingerprint background investigations. Must possess valid CA driver’s license, clean driving record, and be able to drive.

Salary and Benefits: 

Salary range is $78,000-80,000 annualized.
