Job Description

You will be working as an Outbound Phone Transfer agent taking roughly 30-45 calls per hour. On these calls, you will be attempting to get in contact with and to encourage Discover Card holders to speak with another member of the team in order to resolve their past due card balance. To break that down – you will not be taking payments yourself. Instead, your main responsibility will be to update contact information, review scripted disclosures, and transfer card holders to an account specialist who would handle the account further.

Hours of Operation

Monday to Friday: 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Saturday: 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Sunday: 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. (every last Sunday of the month only)

What We Are Looking For:

We are looking for students who...
  • are patient communicators and comfortable speaking with people over the phone.
  • responsible and able to handle a professional job in a career environment – this includes punctuality/attendance expectations, receptive to consistent feedback and coaching, adaptability with a positive attitude, etc.
  • are able to work at least 18 hours per week – with the opportunity to work up to 30 hours during the school year and 39 during school breaks, subject to our business needs.
  • are able to work year round – including the school breaks like summer and winter break.

Perks of Our Job:

  • Tuition Assistance – we’re 100% behind our mission of helping you graduate with less debt.
  • Future Career Building – EAW students have the unique opportunity to work with Discover while in college, creating a leg up on potential summer internships or full-time employment with our partners after you graduate.
  • Student-Friendly Environment – everyone we employee on this program is a student, usually from the U of U or a near-by college, creating a supportive community that understands the life of a working student (plus it’s a great place to make friends).
  • Student-Centric Schedule – we will always work around your class schedule to ensure you never have to work while you’re supposed to be in class.
  • Promotions – EAW offers a variety of student leadership positions in multiple departments like recruiting, IT, training, etc. as we love giving our students the chance to move up and grow into different positions.
  • Location – We’re conveniently located close to campus and are only a few trax stops away from the University of Utah and even have our own U of U shuttle for our students who work our very early shifts.
  • Work part-time during the school year and up to full-time in the summer if you are interested.

So… what’s not so perky?

  • We have strict attendance and punctuality expectations – this is a professional job and we’ll hold you to that.
  • This is a routine phone work position which may be repetitive at times – including back-to-back primarily scripted 1-2 minute phone calls and long periods of sitting down.
  • Some shifts start at 6 a.m. which may be difficult for those non-morning people – although we do offer a $1.00 per hour raise for worked hours between 6 a.m - 7 a.m.
  • Not only do we work around your class schedule, but we also work around all of our students class schedules – this means we don’t always have the ability to work around other obligations (club meetings, social events, second jobs, internships, etc.) and expect you to make this job a primary part of your life (second to school – of course).
  • We’re a PCI Compliant Area – meaning that in your work space you won’t be able to have any paper, pens, electric devices like cell phones or smart watches – but you will have access to those personal items on breaks or lunches.

Working Conditions:

Keeping your health and safety as a priority, the training class will be conducted virtually and you will continue to work remotely from home until we are through this difficult time. Once we return to normal business, this position will be located at our center located just a short Trax ride from campus in Downtown SLC.

Interviews for these positions are being conducted over the phone and virtually. If hired, you will attend a small orientation session and pick-up the required equipment physically at our center, but will you complete training online at your home.

Our COVID-19 Response

With the evolving situation surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the primary focus of Education at Work is the health, safety and well-being of our student employees.

As we continue our work in earnest, please know we are doing all we can to ensure our centers are safe, which includes but are not limited to the following measures:
  • Social distancing. EAW has reduced operations capacity, ensuring students are following social distancing guidelines by working at least six feet apart.
  • Shift-by-shift cleaning protocols. Between each shift, workstations are cleaned with CDC-compliant materials, preparing for the next student.
  • Access to cleaning products. All students have access to cleansing materials should they personally desire to clean their workspace throughout their shift.
  • Daily deep cleaning. At the end of each EAW workday, a professional cleaning crew enters the building, deep cleaning the entire premises using CDC guidelines.

The work that we collectively do on behalf of our business clients is invaluable to their customers, and we don’t take lightly the importance EAW wages and tuition support play in helping students navigate college successfully. These two pillars of our non-profit mission are the reason we continue to remain open during this time.

We understand during these times, there have multiple companies who have made the difficult decision to reduce staff. If you are interested in employment opportunities with Education at Work, please apply via Handshake. We are currently hiring student employees starting at $12 per hour with the opportunity to earn up to $5,250 per year in tuition assistance.
