Elementary Literacy Coach @ South Elementary

General Function:
The Literacy Coach is responsible for supporting all K-5 staff in the implementation of the site reading plan and program. The Coach works directly with teachers in a school providing classroom-based demonstrations, collaborative and one-on-one support, and facilitating teacher inquiry and related professional development. The Coach focuses on enhancing teachers’ ability to provide instruction that builds students’ sense of engagement in the ownership of learning. The Coach also works with administrators and teachers to collect and analyze data, interpret, and use it to guide instructional decisions in the implementation of a 3-Tiered Model. Additionally, Literacy Coaches assist the Principal with administrative functions of the school as assigned by the Principal, including facilities management and scheduling, student activities, school safety and security, emergency procedures, instructional field trips, assembly and special programs, and other areas. The Literacy Coach oversees reading interventions, coordinates trainings for interventionists, observes and evaluates their performance and supports their needs.

Summary and Overall Objective:
* The educator is responsible for the education of assigned students

Essential Functions Duties and Responsibilities:
* Develop/deepen own content knowledge of literacy theory and exemplary practices-whole-group and small-group differentiated instruction for grades K-3. 
* Extend literacy competencies through active participation in: District Level Professional Learning Opportunities, personal coaching with district coach
* Improve K-3 classroom literacy instruction (50% of workday spent in classrooms): provide sustained support to classroom teacher through continuous coaching cycle (pre-conference, data collection, reflective conversations); provide professional learning focused on implementing Utah Core Standards with research based, effective literacy practices using the district program (In-class modeling, team teaching, shadow teaching, etc. Observing teacher instruction and providing feedback. Aiding in implementation of effective literacy practices); provide professional learning focused on literacy assessments (Benchmark/Screener, progress monitoring, diagnostic)
* Professional Responsibilities–School level: support administration and staff through use of data in evaluating and refining school literacy instruction; Literacy Leader for school site (disseminate literacy information, facilitate school PD, PLC, and Data teams); serve on school committees as assigned by administration (examples: School Literacy Committee, Building Leadership Team for literacy issues, MTSS Team); Acadience administration and coordination of testing (ordering and organizing materials)
* Professional Responsibilities–District level: Literacy coaching meetings (twice a month), attend district level Professional Learning Opportunities, Attend data meetings at the school site with school administrator to review progress, plan future services, etc.
* Understanding of proficiency-based teaching and grading
* Oversee reading interventions, coordinate training for interventionists, observe and evaluate their performance and support their needs. 
* Communicate with parents through conferences, telephone calls, e-mails, student planners, school website, and other appropriate means, to discuss the student’s progress.
* Communicate and cooperate with other professional staff regarding the student’s academic and personal growth areas.
* Attendance, physical presence, and timeliness are essential functions of this position.
* Provide and maintain a safe and supportive environment in the classroom and on the school campus.
* Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school district and self-selected professional growth activities.
* Participate in faculty meetings as required.
* Administer appropriate student attendance policies and procedures.
* Participate in appropriate educator evaluation procedures as per district guidelines.
* Administer group standardized tests in accordance with state and district testing procedures.
* Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities
* Select and requisition books and instruction materials; maintain required inventory records.
* Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, colleagues, and members of the community.
* Understand and adhere to laws, district policies, and procedures.
* Maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, school staff, district staff, and members of the community.
* Demonstrate professional ethics as outlined by the Utah Professional Practices Advisory Commission.
* Be a positive role model.
* Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere. 
* Utilize computers and other technological classroom support equipment in student instruction. 
* Devise and utilize techniques, which accurately measure pupil progress. 
* Evaluate pupil’s academic and personal growth, keeping appropriate records, and prepare progress reports. 
* Communicate and cooperate with other professional staff in academic and personal growth areas. 
* Conform to District policies including attendance, absences and evaluations. Attendance must be adequate to acceptably perform listed job functions. 
* Create an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers. 
* Cooperates with the custodian(s) for the general housekeeping needs in the area(s) for which the teacher is assigned.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the education, knowledge and experience requirements; the machines, tools and equipment used; and any licenses or certifications required.

Required Education and Experience:

* Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary or Early Childhood Education, Master’s Degree preferred
* Current Utah Professional Elementary teaching license
* Level 1 and Level 2 Reading Endorsement (or in process/willing to acquire both within a 3-year time frame)


Preferred Education and Job Related Experience:
* Experience working in a K-12 environment. 
* 3+ years of primary grade classroom experience preferred

Required Licenses and Certifications:
Active Utah Early Childhood Education or Utah Professional Elementary Education K-6 Teaching License with proper endorsements authorizing areas assigned. ESL Endorsement would be beneficial.

Terms of Employment:

Full-time 185 Contract Days
