AmeriCorps Math Mentor
The Utah STEM Action Center, a division of the Utah Department of Cultural & Community Engagement, is looking for part-time mentors for our AmeriCorps Math Mentorship program. We are seeking mentors who are community-focused and passionate about education to work with students grades 4-8 building academic confidence and improving math skills. Custom math software will allow mentors of all educational backgrounds to act as a student's guide to greater academic success while providing the essential elements of personal attention and care.
Primary responsibilities will include:
- Provide small-group-based academic mentoring to students struggling to meet math grade level standards.
- Help students improve their math skills using math software programs.
- Work with teachers, school administrators, and parents in your capacity as a math mentor to help your students succeed.
- Recruit and train community volunteers to assist with mentoring students.
- Respect and affirm the diversity of student backgrounds and experiences in your mentoring efforts.
- Participate in supplemental community service
- Participate in regular trainings with other AmeriCorps Math Mentor Members and with the STEM AC program management team.
The qualifications of our ideal candidate include:
- A passion for education and community service.
- An ability to communicate clearly with children.
- A working knowledge of basic mathematics (advanced math education is not required).
- Proficiency with basic computer software.
- An ability to collaborate with teachers, administrators, volunteers, and program managers.
- The ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Successful completion of a criminal background check.
- Proficiency in an additional language (i.e. Spanish, Navajo, etc.) a benefit.
Requirements for this position include successfully passing a National Service Criminal History Check (NSCHC) and be authorized to work in the US.
