Post Masters RA - Energy & Climate Analysis

The Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has one or more openings for a Post-Master’s research associate to conduct research on clean energy policies with a major focus on energy and heating system transitions and climate change, deep decarbonization strategies and their implementation. The anticipated tasks may include:
  • Contributing to clean energy policy research, analysis and modeling including publishing reports and peer-reviewed papers; presentations to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Analysis on district heating policies and climate implications, including assessment of the policy context in Europe and the former Soviet Union;
  • Multi-scale modeling, including supporting the development of new capabilities, analysis of energy efficiency and emission mitigation policies; and the use of these models/methods for scientific inquiry and decision research.

This is a full-time appointment with benefits (renewed annually for up to 2 years based on satisfactory performance). The research associate will contribute to cutting edge interdisciplinary research in close collaboration with senior researchers at JGCRI. The associate will contribute to analysis of energy and environmental policies, measures and pathways. This may include analysis using JGCRI’s open-source human-Earth systems modeling framework, GCAM, which combines models of energy and the economy, land-use, agriculture, water, climate, air-pollution, and ecosystems. Project work will include at least some of the following: researching energy technologies, working with stakeholders, writing reports and papers, giving presentations, using computer models, and conducting comparative policy research.
JGCRI researchers are leaders in the international and national climate and global change research communities through prominent roles in science-based assessments of energy and agricultural systems and water resources. The work environment at JGCRI is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary, focused on solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges associated with energy, water and environment. Located in College Park, Maryland, JGCRI is a partnership between the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the University of Maryland at College Park.

Note that on-boarding and work are anticipated to be remote until the COVID19 situation allows a safe return to an office environment.

The successful candidate must have a Master’s degree in public policy, engineering, economics, operations research, management science, environmental science, or related field.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, critical thinking skills, and the ability to work in a team environment are necessary. Language skill, particularly in Ukrainian or Russian is also strongly preferred. Research experience in the field of energy and environment and understanding of engineering concepts related to energy systems are highly desirable. Background in computer simulation modeling or related quantitative research, and programing experience are a plus. GPA of 3.5 or higher is preferred.

JGCRI REQUIRES THAT ALL APPLICANTS SUBMIT A RESUME AND A COVER LETTER, AS A SINGLE PDF DOCUMENT , describing how your education, skills and experience align with this position’s duties. Please attach your cover letter to your resume as one document when you submit your application online.
